Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council condemns Magdeburg Christmas market attack and expresses solidarity with victims

December 23, 2024

In light of the recent tragic events at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, the Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council (IMPIC) extends its deepest condolences to the victims and their families. We unequivocally condemn this heinous act of violence, which stands in stark contrast to the teachings of Islam and the principles of peace and coexistence that we uphold.

The attack, perpetrated by an individual identified as a Saudi-born psychiatrist with known anti-Islamic sentiments, resulted in the loss of five innocent lives, including a nine-year-old boy, and left many others injured. Extremists like this should face the strictest punishment by law. There should be zero tolerance for such extremism.

Such actions are abhorrent and have no place in any society. Islam teaches the sanctity of human life, as emphasised in the Quran: “Whoever kills an innocent soul in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.”

We urge all communities to come together in solidarity during this difficult time, rejecting hatred and division. It is imperative to promote understanding, tolerance, and mutual respect among all faiths and cultures.

IMPIC remains committed to fostering peace and integration within Irish society and beyond. We stand ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that such tragedies are not repeated and that the values of compassion and humanity prevail.
