Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council strongly condemns the systematic campaign of persecution, violence, rape, setting huts on fire exclusion and massacre of Rohingya minority which has led many activists to argue that Rohingya are the victims of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The Rohingya is an oppressed Muslim minority in overwhelmingly Buddhist Burma. Most of Burma’s estimated 1.1 million Rohingya live in northern Rakhine state. According to the UN, some 38,000 have fled into neighbouring Bangladesh. Bangladesh already hosts 400,000 Rohingya and has said it does not want more.

The ongoing persecution of the Rohingya minority by extremist Buddhist mobs and Myanmar government’s denial of citizenship and other rights for the Muslim minority are real underlying issues. Unless these issues are resolved by the international community, the temporary reliefs offered are far from ending the larger crisis.

There needs to be sustained pressure from the UN and wider international community on the Myanmar government to stop violence against the Rohigya community and pass through legislation that recognises the Rohingya as legitimate citizens, with rights to vote and rights to Civi liberties.

The world was rightly horrified when #ISIS persecuted religious minorities, but not when Myanmar is committing genocide against the Rohingya Muslim minority.

Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council is organising a protest, on Friday 8^th September 2017 at 5pm in front of the GPO, against the terror committed by the Government of Myanmar. Previously the Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council had also organised a protest against ISIS terror. IMPIC is committed to speak out against all forms of extremism and terrorism.
